Welcome to the solar energy era

Solar energy is the renewable energy by excellency, diffused in the form of electromagnetic radiation of the Sun and reaching us through the atmosphere before being absorbed on the surface of the Earth. Solar energy is the root of the cycles of water, wind and photosynthesis, upon which depend organic life, also the animal kingdom and finally Humanity.

Renewable energy sources indirectly derived from solar energy include:
– hydraulic energy, derived from the kinetic energy of water whose cycle depends on the Sun;
– wind energy, derived from the kinetic energy of the wind associated with the heating and evaporation of water, generated by the Sun;
– energy of the biomass in organic and woody form as well as the geothermal energy of low temperature, coming from the superficial layers of the ground warmed by the Sun.

The easiest, but also the directest and most efficient, renewable energy production technic consists though in capturing energy from the electromagnetic radiation of the Sun, which can subdivided into 2 distinct technologies:
– solar thermal to store heat energy from electromagnetic radiation for example domestic hot water, auxiliary heating or industrial processes;
– photovoltaic technology for converting electromagnetic radiation into electrical energy for example primary household needs, electric vehicle and heat pump power supply.

Solar energy is renewable and inexhaustible energy on the scale of humanity, whose heat storage and electrical conversion, combined with other sources of energy depending on specific needs, allows everyone to become a producer-consumer (prosumer), by increasing its energy self-sufficiency, decreasing its ecological footprint and optimizing its own carbon balance (CO2).

Solar Thermal

Solar thermal technic is mainly composed of solar thermal collector, as a device designed to collect solar heat transmitted by the solar radiation, to communicate it to a heat transfer fluid (liquid or gas), in order to accumulated it in a heat storage component. This heat can then be used to prepare hot water, for auxiliary building heating or in various industrial processes.

Solar thermal applications are divided into several types, especially in

-small scale residential units for hot water preparation in response to domestic heat needs using glazed collectors or p.ex. pool heating with open collectors;

-large decentralized thermodynamic solar power plants, producing heat and electricity using parabolic trackers combined with heat-power coupling systems.

The heat transfer fluid may be running water, circulating air, an antifreeze mixture (p.ex. water-glycol), a phase change fluid, or an oil having a higher vaporization temperature for applications requiring very high temperatures (p.ex. high temperature sterilization).

Solar thermal systems are mainly used in our latitude for the preparation of domestic hot water for individual homes, especially for individual and homes with combined solar thermal systems (p.ex domestic hot water and building heating), or as a remote solar heating plant, to meet the needs of industrial processes and even for solar thermal air conditioning (p.ex extracting heat from the ambient air)!

Photovoltaics

Photovoltaic technology is the process allowing the production of renewable electrical energy with the electromagnetic radiation of Sun.

The photovoltaic cell is the basic electronic component using the photoelectric effect of sunlight, several interconnected cells form a photovoltaic module.

Several modules connected in series and/or in parallel form a solar power plant producing electricity for use in islanding systems, or to feed into private or public electrical distribution network.

Isolated fotovoltaic power plants may directly consume the electricity produced in non gridconnected sites, equipped, with storage device in particolar batteries, in order to benefit of electricity also outside of production hours (p. ex. overnight).

Photovoltaic power plants can also be connected to distribution network, these facilities are equipped with inverters converting the direct current into alternative current, according to the specific characteristics of each local area network (p. ex. 50 Hz frequency). This second installation category requires on purpose no storage device, electricity being consumed by the nearest consumers on the electrical network.

The photovoltaic technology is subdivided into monocrystalline solar modules on one hand, with higher yield and maximum efficiency per unit area, for applications on smaller residential surfaces. Polycrystalline solar modules on the other hand have tendentiously the better quality/price ratio, why their use dominates the photovoltaic market with an optimum returns and also a predictable lifetime of over 30 years.

The amorphous solar modules have finally considerable potential for the solar industry with various applications and a higher performance by diffused light. However amorphous silicon cells have a lower efficency compared with standard criystalline modules. Therefore they are more suitable for industrial sized photovoltaic power plants and large-scale ground mounted solar parcs, with consequent economies of scale on their production costs and the carbon balance (CO2)

The exponential evolution of the installed total photovoltaic power is in particular the result of the technological improvements and especially the massive reduction of production costs considered over the last 10 years, with nearly 100 GW (Gigawatt) newly installed per year between 2017 and 2019, whether a installed capture area on a planetary scale totaling today the equivalent of more than 500’000 football fields (2’500’000’000 m2)!

Heat pumps

A heating system with heat pumps with electric drive, combined p.ex. with the house’s own solar or photovoltaic system, consists mainly of 3 parts:

-The heat source system, which extracts the required energy from the environment

-The actual heat pump, which harnesses the extracted environmental heat of ambiant air or water

-The heat distribution and storage system that distributes or temporarily stores the thermal energy in the building

The technical process takes place in three steps for various heating needs: Swimming pools, single or multi-family houses, to office, shopping and industrial buildings.

Private & Professional vehicles

Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the worldwide transition to sustainable energy.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers who wanted to prove that consumers didn’t need to compromise to drive electric – that electric vehicles can be better, quicker and funnier to drive than gasoline cars. Today, Tesla builds not only full-electric vehicles but also infinitely scalable clean energy generation and storage products. Tesla believes the faster the society stops relying on fossil fuels and moves towards zero-emission, better will be the future.

The Fendt e100 Vario now becomes the first practical, battery-powered tractor which can be used in normal operation for a full working day without the need to recharge.

The world’s largest electric truck engineered in Switzerland
The world’s largest electric vehicle with an empty weight of 58 tons, a payload of 65 tons has been christened “Lynx” in the presence of numerous representatives from business and politics and has been working in the quarry of Vigier Ciment. The eDumper is the largest and most powerful battery-powered electric wheeled vehicle in the world and never before has a comparable vehicle been able to save such a large amount of CO2. According to preliminary calculations, the vehicle will save up to 1,300 tonnes of CO2 and 500,000 litres of diesel over the next 10 years. The project is supported by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
